300 artists dotted across 80 precincts or bitumen canvas’s around the city will transform the darkness into a dazzling cacophony of sights and sounds. Tickling all of our senses from 7 pm to 7am.

Alive with the sights and sounds of a plethora of artistic creativity; Zombies, live music and numerous artistic installations will have us all wondering the streets until the early hours. A number of light shows will be playing continuously along with water sculptures that play unencumbered with light refraction to capture the audience’s attention.

Hidden art installations will surprise from just around the next corner, follow the musical notes drifting through the air as dozens of musicians throughout the festival ply their craft for the wandering audience. The Spiegel tent has also joined the festivities putting on a special White Night performance with a handpicked selection of outstanding acts.

The tradition of the White Night festivals began in Paris 2002, aiming to bring art directly to the people through the extensive use of public spaces. The festivals celebration of life has quickly spread around the world, this year 23 countries will be projecting their own character into the night.

A night time wonderland will envelope Melbourne, from dusk till dawn sensory overload will be will be the norm and free to all. If you are sure of foot and mobile all night head for the CBD and enjoy the festivities on February 23.

Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy had this to say about the news:  “It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” Kathleen began. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

George Lucas seems to be pleased with the announcement, saying of JJ “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller.  He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands,”

Lucasfilm is busily assembling the team that will make Star Wars 7 a reality. So far Bryan Burk has been signed on to produce and Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt will be putting pen to paper to write the story.

Little is known of the new movies themselves. What we know as certainty so far is that Star Wars 7,8 and 9 are being planned  as a trilogy with 7 to be released during 2015. Also the new movies will be based on completely new original stories.  Other than that all we can say is that Lucasfilm’s has a lot of work ahead.

It has been nearly 10 years since we were last able to partake in a Star Wars adventure, Revenge of the Sith being released in 2005. Alas the wait has only just begun, as have the questions. Will Star Wars return to the action adventures of the original series or will they try for a more cerebral experience of the second trilogy?

“We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm, we’re not sure what yet,” Lee said. “We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation.”

Lee has shown in producing the series, even the $5 million per episode price tag didn’t slow him down, a cost that has stalled the show in the past with Lucasfilm not willing to bear the cost. Lee is eager, willing to pay whatever it takes, but there is still a long way to go. Disney and Lucasfilm still need to agree to the idea and commit resources to the project.

Before the Disney take over Lucasfilm had become notorious for being over cautious when it came to new Star Wars content. Many movie and TV scripts have been worked on over the years, many canned for not being Star Wars enough. Preliminary script work has been done on an acted TV show version of Star Wars; sadly much of this early work has been used in the upcoming video game Star Wars: 1313, according to reports.

Being over protective of their Star Wars universe was a mentality that kept Lucasfilms new adventures to a minimum. After spending $4 billion big ones on the franchise Disney may be a little keener to get the new content rolling out and the money rolling in.

Kelly has been busier than a one armed weaver during 2012. After making a sci-fi splash in the Metal Hurlant Chronicles TV series Kelly stole the show in Keith Lemon: The Movie then finished 2012 off with a bang in the Crazy Horse burlesque ‘Forever Crazy’.

Reminiscent of the classic Twilight Zone with a science fiction / fantasy twist Metal Hurlant is a breath of fresh air. With a new story every week Metal Hurlant is a rock and roll adventure.

Based on the Metal Hurlant comic magazine the TV series follows the journey of the Metal Hurlant comet, travelling through space encountering new worlds and passing on its heavy metal influences to all it encounters.  The Hurlant is itself the remnants of a once great living planet, destined to roam endlessly through time and space, howling with the terror and pain of its past.

Episode 1, Kings Crown

The first six episodes that make-up this first series were aired in France October 2012, to mixed receptions. The peak 2.2% rating wasn’t spectacular but the series was good enough to get people watching late at night. The series will also air in Europe and the US during 2013. Series 2 of Metal Hurlant Chronicles is already in planning with production aiming for 2013 and release in 2014.

The series opens with a gladiator twist; Steampunk meets King Arthur if you will. ‘Kings Crown’ follows the age old story of a local hero and an evil King, with a last minute twist of course. The second episode ‘Shelter Me’ finds us trapped underground in a post apocalyptic nightmare of nice. The series finishes with a bang, bringing out the big guns. with Highpants favourite actress and model Kelly Brook staring in the sixth episode. Playing Skarr the outlaw who gives Hondo the bounty hunter a reason to live. A sad tale of love lost the sixth episode sends the series out on a science fiction high.

Visually the series is as varied as the stories that are told, shot in stunning Hi-Def the short sharp episodes provide a pleasing surprise, they are really good.

Being an anthology series the cast changes with the demands of each episode, the first six episodes saw Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, James Masters, Michelle Ryan, David Belle, Dominique Pinon, Joe Flanigan, Rutger Hauer and Kelly Brook all play their parts.

Metal Hurlant Chronicles could just be the perfect solution to the Christmas doldrums, a dose of old school escapism. Here at Highpants we unanimously voted Metal Hurlant the sleeper cult sci-fi hit of Christmas.

Born into a military family while posted in Stutgart Germany Reggie saw much of the world before settling in Great Falls Montana. In 1990 at 18 Reggie moved to Seattle, attending Cornish College of the Arts he quickly began performing with many of Seattle’s favourite local bands. Perfecting his artistic talents Reggie has steadily built a cult following, built on a foundation of live performance.  After a number of years experimenting with traditional stand up comedy performances around Seattle he would eventually roll his performance styles together, creating his unique live act that will have you tapping your toes with a grin from ear to ear.

Part of his unique performance style is his use of a simple collection of gadgets to produce his backing music for his performances. An integral part of his live act the production of these crafty backing tunes is an art-form in itself, all produced with equipment that can fit into backpack and costs less than a $1,000.

Moving to Brooklyn New York in 2004 to concentrate on his solo comedy performances Reggie was as busy as ever, especially producing internet videos for Vimeo, Funny or Die and CollegeHumor. Keeping busy quickly built an impressive catalogue of video content, his video ‘What about blowjobs’ was the first to go viral and introduce the world to Reggie’s live performances.

Watching Reggies videos you quickly realise that he will introduce almost any vocal style or instrument into his performances. His skills as a beatboxer are equal to any, though he doesn’t rely solely on these ability in his show, they are simply woven in amongst his other skill;, singer, musician, comedian and just all round excellent live act.

The most often gadgets used  by Reggie on-stage includes the Shure SM57 microphone, the Boss RV-5 reverb pedal, the Line 6 DL4 Stompbox Delay Modeler and the Electro-Harmonix 2880 Super Multi-track Looper. With the entire stage his canvas, with each performance evolving before your ears Reggie Watts has quickly established his place on the Highpants list of favourite artists. With a unique on stage presence matched by his vocal talents and light comedy touches Reggie is a one man jukebox, who will also put a smile on your dial.

Teaming up with NBA superstars Kevin Durant and James Harden of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kate seems to settle into the life of a professional basketball player with aplomb. During a quick impromptu red carpet interview at the premier for ‘Everything or Nothing, The Untold Story of 007’ Kate revealed her dreams of being a Bond girl. Maybe it was the red carpet talking but she goes on to say that “playing a Bond girl is a very prestigious title, and it would be a very cool role”.  She also admits that she might need to brush up on her acting skills to work opposite Daniel Craig. The Mass Effect franchise began with the first Mass Effect game released in 2007, initially as an XBox 360 exclusive.  Various versions would eventually be ported and now Windows, PS3 and Nintendo each have Mass Effect in action.  The original Mass Effect trilogy of video games followed Commander Sheppard as he battles the Reapers, learning about their fiendish plans along the way.

Fans of Anime in general along with fans of the Mass Effect franchise have much to look forward to this Christmas. Especially if Production IG’s previous works are anything to go, Paragon Lost will be a Blu-Ray classic. Ghost in the Shell and Kill Bill: Vol.1 are both visual and aural feasts that demonstrated the value of Blu-Rays extra capacities, and both are Production IG gems.
